May & June On Handa Island 2020

May and June are two of the busiest months for the wildlife on Handa. Many of the birds on the cliffs lay eggs in May which are incubated until late June. Vigilance is paramount if they are to not lose their clutch to predators such as Herring Gulls, who have their own families to feed.

Otters begin to frequent the island's shores with young kits in tow, the mother teaching them the ropes of survival before the young ones gain independence and the family unit is disbanded. Male Great Skuas now have to catch twice as much food to satiate both themselves and their mate, who has now become completely dependent on their partner for food. Known for their tenacity in obtaining food, the Great Skua will take Gannets, which are three times heavier, out of the sky and harass them until their catch is disgorged.

We arrived on Handa less than a week before a nationwide lockdown was implemented. We spent three months alone on the island carrying out important monitoring, practical and maintenance work throughout lockdown. I produced this video describing what life what like on Handa during lockdown and the work we were carrying out.
